Emeritus Professor from the University of Oxford, UK and President of the Intl. Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB.ORG). Graduating (1972) and gaining a PhD (1975) in biophysics from the University of Leeds, he spent time (1975 – 1980) at the Max Plank Institute for Biophysics, Göttingen FRG before gaining an appointment (1980) at the University of Oxford until retirement (2019), then taking up a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship (2021-2023). His work has focused on the use and development of biophysical methods to study functional aspects of biological membranes and their proteins, including GPCRs, photoreceptors, transporters and channels, with applications to bionanotechnology. Methods that have been pioneered include spin label electron spin resonance, solid state NMR, microscale electrophoresis, AFM, diffraction and new isotopic labelling methods. He has been elected a Fellow of several societies (RSoB, RSC, IoP, Am. BPS), received many awards and is an Honorary Fellow of the British and Hungarian Biophysical Societies.
